"Movement is life; and it is well to be able to forget the past, and kill the present by continual change." — Jules Verne

We must learn from our past, and we can even admire it. Just like the people in this historic. majestic piece by Grady Frederick. But we must never let the past define or confine our future.

In order to move on, we sometimes have to let go of the past.

As you improve and learn, you’ll find that you’ve outgrown certain things, thought patterns, and even people. And sometimes, it’s difficult to let go and move forward.

So we cling on, hoping that the past will go with us into the new and bright future. Or at least that it will follow us after a while.

But of course, that’s not how it works. That’s not how we move forward. In order for something new to grow, old has to give place. We don’t have to forget the old, and we probably even shouldn’t, but we do have to sever our attachment to it if we want to discover what’s beyond the horizon, how far our limits extend, and what we’re capable of.

And this, of course, isn’t true only for individuals but also for companies, countries, political parties, and groups of any size or shape.

Let’s be kind to each other, compassionate, and understanding. And let’s not allow our past, however good or bad it may look, to hinder our progress and our way forward.
